Marcho Gronge e Luca Giuoco

“Il Giuoco di Gronge” is both the title and a wordplay describing the collaboration between Luca Giuoco (an ambient/experimental musician and author of the blog COLLETTIVOINCONSCIO) and Marcho Gronge (an extremely experimental musician, author of two solo projects). This new collaboration was conceived as a series of moves and countermoves between the two artists who, during the making of the album, responded to each other’s compositions to create a paradoxical blend that allows the coexistence of their respective musical identities.

While Luca Giuoco operates within an ambient soundscape torn apart by seismic shocks, environmental recordings, and glitches, Marcho Gronge crafts more ironic and unpredictable textures, combining nonsense lyrics, no wave, and Residents-style surrealism, as demonstrated by the delirious albums “Dolci Ricordi” (2012) and “XXX Cremone Gigante Per Soli Adulti” (2013).

This back-and-forth “game” ultimately results in an album cohesive enough to be almost considered a concept work: a long composition divided into eleven experiments involving mellotron, noise, glitch, sound art, and field recordings. The opening track, “Ritorno”, through the automated voice of a train station announcement, conveys the sense of the beginning of a journey—perhaps a return to something not yet resolved.

Aphasic vocalizations (“Contemporaneo”), electronic lullabies (“Fossile”), and noise-driven moments (“Lattiginoso”) shape a long trajectory toward unexpected, hypnotic melodies (“Gorgo”), torn apart by cellphone-like motifs that eventually dissolve into a dark, unsettling ambient flow.

Alongside the aforementioned “Gorgo”, the most effective synthesis between the two musicians is undoubtedly “Alterego”, where Gronge’s lo-fi reading immerses the listener in a philosophical past of reflection, now swept away by a violent and dehumanized modernity, summarized through noisy electronic pulses. “Umanesimo” stands as the most emotionally solid moment, with synths building a crescendo of pathos enriched by background noise.

“Il Giuoco di Gronge” works both as a dialogue between two distinct musicians and as a gateway to an alternative vision of the world, where nonsense ceases to be such and becomes the only language still capable of conveying truth.
